Engineering Capabilities

Engineering Capabilities

Not a cookie-cutter operation, GFS doesn’t just build standard booths. The majority of our business is done through custom projects. In the aviation and government industries, this is especially true. The strength and quality of GFS products comes from precision structural engineering and continual product development. We will design, engineer, manufacture and build equipment to your unique requirements. This level of customization requires an expansive and experienced design and engineering staff.

GFS’s in-house design and engineering team – consisting of electrical engineers, software developers, licenced structural engineers, airflow specialists, code compliance specialists, mechanical engineers and systems designers – provides pre-contract, mechanical, electrical, AutoCAD, PLC and programming functions on custom and standard equipment orders.

PE Licensure & Stamps

Several of GFS' engineers have pursued PE licensure, the engineering profession's highest standard of competence. As licensed professional engineers, they can prepare, sign and seal engineering drawings.

Our professional engineers have the resources to provide stamped drawings in all 50 U.S. states and Canada.

Advanced Technology

GFS has acquired Computational Fluid Flow Dynamics (CFD) software. This advanced software allows us to simulate booth airflow performance. By modeling the various elements of the booth (intake/exhaust filters, intake/exhaust location, fan performance, etc.), we can provide customers with a preview of how well the booth will perform.

This technology is especially beneficial for large, custom projects, as it allows us to test out engineering designs before the booth is built, saving time and money, and improving the overall booth performance.

Code Compliance

A crucial part of the purchasing and installation process of a spray booth is ensuring that your installation meets all of the safety and legal requirements that apply to your city, state and country. GFS makes sure that our products meet and/or exceed all the applicable codes related to the equipment.

GFS staff regularly follows and contributes to the advancement of codes and standards that affect the industries that we work in. Currently, one of our engineers serves on the NFPA Technical Committee on Finishing Processes, a key standard in the finishing industry.

Energy Efficiency

GFS understands the importance of energy efficiency. Process equipment utilizes a lot of energy, and the bigger the equipment, the higher the energy usage. To reduce this expense, GFS has identified several options for conserving energy with your finishing equipment. From design changes, to energy-efficient lighting, to heat recovery systems, GFS will work with you to develop the best solution for your business.

Heat Recovery

Heat/Energy Recovery

As air is exhausted from process equipment (such as paint booths, ovens, etc.), that heat is lost as well. Heat recovery systems are the answer to reclaiming some of this heat that escapes with the exhausted air, in turn providing measurable energy savings. GFS has installed many of these systems for businesses and government entities. On average, energy recovery systems will provide 40-50% energy savings for air make-up systems serving the booth for both heating and cooling.

Recirculating paint booth

Recirculation

With the continually rising energy costs, and the specific temperature and humidity requirements of the aviation industry’s advanced coatings, recirculation is an effective method of reducing not only operating costs of the paint booth, but also equipment costs. Taking into account the specific booth climate requirements of your process, GFS can provide a recirculated air system for your booth that will provide accurate control of the booth climate and airflow, while providing the most efficient operating system possible. Not to overlook safety, all GFS recirculating booths include all of the required airflow monitoring systems and controls to ensure a completely safe operating environment during all modes of operation.

Conformal shape aircraft paint booth

Conformal Shape/Design

One size doesn't fit all, especially in regards to the requirements for aircraft paint booths. Since the size of a paint booth is directly related to airflow requirements and energy consumption, a conformal design can significantly reduce both. In some cases, these designs can result in a savings of 15-30% in capital and operating costs when compared to that of a traditional booth design. GFS will work with you to design a booth that specifically meets the unique requirements of your product(s).

VFDs
Dual VFD

Controls

GFS can also help you reduce energy costs with controls such as motors, VFDs, multi-mode operation and filter monitoring.

Motors
As opposed to traditional motors, premium efficiency motors can be incorporated into your booth, saving about 3% of energy. Premium efficiency motors use copper die-cast rotors as opposed to aluminum.

VFDs
Variable frequency devices (VFDs) are often used in GFS booths for energy efficiency. VFDs assure that your booth operates at top efficiency and at the lowest energy usage. Without VFDs, fans operate at the same rpm regardless of the pressure differential.

Multi-Mode Operation
Multi-mode operation allows the user to select an operating mode based specifically on the operations taking place within the booth. Since today's booths are typically used for multiple functions beyond painting, additional modes such as stand-by, prep and curing can offer additional energy savings by reducing the operating capacity of the booth when full airflow and lighting are not needed.

Filter Monitoring
When filters have exceeded their holding capacity, unnecessary energy is used to draw air through them. Filter monitoring devices allow the operator to monitor filter loading, and properly schedule and maintain equipment. GFS offers various filter monitoring devices for both intake and all stages of exhaust filtration, to ensure your booth is operating at peak efficiency throughout the life of the equipment.

Aircraft paint booth lighting

Lighting

GFS knows that lighting is a crucial element of the painting environment. A well-lit booth can make a world of difference in the quality of a paint job. Modern technology has given way to improved lighting at reduced power. GFS engineers will help you develop a lighting layout in your booth that optimizes the lighting levels, as well as the number of fixtures and their location in the booth. To support the design process, GFS will also provide lighting calculations, which will show a graphic representation of the lighting levels you can expect in the booth.

Project Management

Project management

On large projects, GFS assigns a dedicated project manager to follow your project through from start to finish, keeping the project on budget and on time. The project manager will become your primary contact once the sale is complete. This person is responsible for developing the project schedule and monitoring the budget, equipment quality and project billings.

Other duties include:
- Visit customer, job site, building officials as necessary
- Coordinate project requirements with design, engineering and customer service departments
- Quality and hire outside consultants, subcontractors and special vendors
- Coordinate with general contractors or architecture and engineering (A&E) firms on building design and layout
- Coordinate project warranty

- Complete closeout documentation
