Aerospace NESHAP filtration:

Aerospace NESHAP requires the use of high efficiency filters to remove 95% removal of particulates over 2 micron size.  The use of a 3-stage filtration system is mandated and the filters must be certified in accordance with EPA Method 319.

GFS uses a filtration system that provides 99% removal of most paint spray aerosols.  This makes the approval of these booths by environmental agencies a simple matter.

NESHAP filtration also requires operation of the filter chamber at very negative static pressures.  We typically operate at 3” static pressure.  This means exhaust chambers must be structurally stiffened to withstand these pressures.

VOC Control with Carbon:

Carbon beds and carbon filters are used to remove 96% of VOCs from the airstream.  This equipment uses very simple carbon filter of 24” square x 3” thick cells.  It requires an additional filter rack and maintenance access to remove the cells.  The function of the cells is to adsorb hydrocarbons from the air and imprison them on the surface of the activated carbon.

NESHAP considers carbon filtration an acceptable means of control and GFS has earned “Best Available Control Technology” for our implementation, and that honor still remains on booths being installed at this time.  Approval of our booth technology by the environmental agencies is simple and assured by using BACT.

Plenum Filter Doors:

Plenum Filter Doors allow for fully controlled airflow into the booth.  They are only used on crossdraft booths that are forced draft booths. The air is double or triple filtered to provide the ultimate in cleanliness and freedom from dust and lint.  The only way that dirt can enter the booth is for painters to carry it in.

The use of an air-ride suspension on the door drive system is unique and provides the most forgiving ride for this style of door over uneven terrain. The design keeps a low center of gravity to allow for precise control of the door positioning and low inertial wobble.  It also provides a wide steady base to resist moments from wind loads typical near open spaces like runways.

Variable Speed Fans:

If a 3-stage filter system is used, such as the NESHAP option, it is wise to use a variable speed fan to change the fan speed as the filter load with particulate.  This will maintain a constant airflow velocity in the booth until it is time to change the filters.

Parts and Glue Booths:

Parts and Glue booths are used in many “Back Shop” environments to paint parts removed from aircraft, paint ground equipment and support equipment and to catch the vapors from gluing operations.

In addition, batch ovens are often used to cure parts such as radomes and composite structures.

Sanding booths are used to contain the dust from sanding operations especially in composite repair shops.
